Making a fence gate with your own hands: features of working with different designs. DIY gate - how to make a gate

03.09.2016 20479

It is difficult to imagine a personal plot without a fence. Beautiful fence and the gate are an integral compositional accent that influences the overall design of the estate. Each functional element - handles, hinges, mailbox, lamp, address sign - is subject to a specific style decision of the fence. Making a gate is not very difficult if you know how.

Deciding on the material and location

The most common materials for manufacturing.

The following factors support the first option:

  • availability;
  • ease of manufacture and repair;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • versatility;
  • aesthetics.

The disadvantage of this type of structure is its fragility and the need for constant maintenance. If you decide to make a wooden gate, treat the boards and bars with special solutions.

Wickets made from profiled sheets also have a long list of advantages:

  • strength;
  • reliability;
  • convenience and ease of installation;
  • versatility;
  • lack of additional care;
  • availability.

Low visibility of a fence made of corrugated sheets can be attributed to both positive and negative factors. Install the gate in the front part of the fence, in a place close to the entrance to the house.

Types of fence gates differ in the material of manufacture and the method of opening:

  • swing;
  • sliding

The second option is more difficult to install.

Setting up columns

The size of the gate in the fence is determined by the client’s wishes. At the same time, the degree of visibility is taken into account. If the gate is blind, you can install a peephole. The wide gate is inconvenient to use. The standard width of a fence for a gate is 90–100 cm. The wooden panel goes well with any columns. When installing them, consider a number of factors.

  1. Can . They need to be treated with antiseptic and waterproofing solutions. So that the tree is less exposed to moisture in the ground, it is treated with mining. It is also advisable to use waterproofing film. She is placed in a hole.
  2. Asbestos cement poles must be installed in the ground below the freezing level. In any case, the depth cannot be less than 1m. The width of the hole in diameter is 10 cm larger than the pillar. For brick pillars, the depth of the foundation also cannot be less than 1 m.
  3. The pillars are installed and covered with crushed stone. It is important to maintain perpendicular installation. and wait to dry. The pillars must stand in the poured cement for at least a week.
  4. If we have a wooden fence with a gate, and the posts are made of brick or concrete, it is necessary to attach wooden blocks. Loops will be screwed to them and the pretend element will rest.

Manufacturing and installation of a wooden gate

Executed from:

  • metal profiled pipes;
  • wooden beams.

The process occurs in several stages.

  1. A 40-centimeter beam is suitable for making a wooden frame. The shape can be made rectangular or resembling the letter Z. Recesses of 50 by 100 mm are made on horizontal bars. Then recesses are made in the vertical bars. When attaching the timber to the post, the places where the hinges are attached must coincide. Next, the pre-processed one is knocked down. To do this, the bars are laid out on a flat, clean surface, in one plane. Wooden crossbars are connected using metal plates. Fastening is done with self-tapping screws. To strengthen the frame of the future product, it is supplemented with corners.
  2. Planks are placed longitudinally or transversely on the prepared structure. Their height and shape depend on the size and shape of the gate. Fastening is also done using self-tapping screws. Now the product is painted or varnished several times. Each new layer is applied to the previously dried previous one.
  3. The next step in the work is fastening with a loop. Hinges for gates must be reliable to cope with weight and additional loads, such as strong winds. Buy heavy duty decorated hinges. You can also choose a handle for them, maintaining one style . When hanging, we must not forget about the technical gap at the bottom of the gate. It should be at least 10 cm. This will prevent snow from freezing in winter.
  4. Fence gates are equipped with a mortise or overhead lock that can be locked from the inside and outside. It is mounted on the vertical part of the frame. To do this, determine the exact installation location and mark it on the beam. They make a groove, apply a lock and fix the fastening points. It is important to correctly mark and drill the cavity point for the lock cylinder in the post or block. A fixing plate must be installed there. Mark and make a hole for the connecting rod in the gate. Having finished with the holes, install and secure the lock. They check his work.

As you can see, making a gate in a wooden fence with your own hands is not at all difficult.

Manufacturing and installation of gates from corrugated sheets

A metal fence gate is also easy to make. The described column installation process also applies to this option. The only difference is that wooden posts are least suitable for such a gate. The optimal width of a gate made in a fence is also 1 m. If the height of the planned product exceeds 2 m, the frame will have to be strengthened.

  • To make the frame base, take a profiled pipe with a cross-section of 0.6 by 3 cm. But it is better to use a pipe with a diameter of at least 0.4 cm. This will greatly simplify the subsequent installation of a mortise lock. Carefully consider the dimensions and measure necessary details. Cutting is done at an angle of 45 degrees. In this case, the weld seam will be less noticeable. The corners of the frame can be strengthened with triangular overlays. Before welding, all dimensions are carefully checked again. In order to make a gate yourself, you should take into account that welding is carried out using a special circuit. It consists of a sheet of thick plywood and clamps with which the metal elements will be pressed during welding. This will prevent the metal from deforming. Remove the clamps after the seams have completely cooled. Then they are cleaned.
  • In order to prevent the product from being removed from its hinges after installation for the purpose of illegal entry, the hinges are installed towards each other. They are welded with seams of 1–2 cm. The distance from the top and bottom edges of the gate to the hinges is 20–30 cm. If you want to make a gate in the fence correctly, do not forget about this.
  • If the size of the pipe for the frame is 0.4 by 4 cm, a narrow-profile mortise lock is optimal. Next, mark the location of the slot for the lock body, the cavity for the core and the handle attachment. Using a grinder, cut out lines along the long side of the lock. Holes are made on the short sides. Finish to exact dimensions using a file. The cavities for the core are made with a burr. Holes are made for the screws. Install a lock.
  • The frame is installed vertically in the opening, fixing it with a wooden block at the bottom. On the post, accurately and accurately determine the location of the second half of the loops. The height from the bottom edge of the product to the floor is at least 10 cm. The hinges are “basted” with a temporary seam, the door is hung and the correct fastening is checked. If the gate in the fence is functioning normally, permanent seams are applied, which are thoroughly cleaned. After this, the structure is painted at least 2 times. To install a place for a crossbar on a post, it is smeared with chalk and the lock is closed. The receiving unit is installed in the marked location.
  • The last stage is the installation of the profile sheet. It is fastened with roofing screws horizontally through the wave, and vertically into the transverse beams. It is advisable to cover the edges with decorative strips. The handle and lock lining are installed.

Possible installation errors

After the fence gate is installed, you should once again make sure that the work done is correct. There are a number of frequently repeated mistakes.

  1. The measurements and calculations were made incorrectly.
  2. The gate closes and opens poorly, which indicates the absence of a strict vertical alignment of the installed pillars.
  3. The columns are poorly cemented, or the cement hardening time is not fully maintained. In this case, the structure will quickly become loose.
  4. Technological clearances are not maintained. The product fits too tightly to the posts, or large gaps remain.
  5. The perpendicularity of the frame fastening is broken. The distortion of the design is obvious.
  6. The seams are poorly cleaned. The product looks sloppy.
  7. The frame of the gate with non-standard dimensions is not reinforced. This will lead to rapid failure of the structure.
  8. The lock is not installed correctly, making it difficult to operate.

If you did everything thoughtfully and correctly, the gate will last for many years, without additional physical and material investments.

The movable part of the fence, designed to enter the territory of a private area or a secluded area on it, is called a gate. As a rule, this is a single-leaf door leading to a courtyard or part of an entrance or entry structure (gate). The choice of model and the material used can match the entire fence, and can also be made in the form of a structure combined with it or ideally combined textures.

Material selection, what you need to know?

The manufacture of a gate involves careful selection and calculation of both the amount of materials and the size of the structure. It is worth paying attention to some details:

  • material for making the entire fence;
  • style on the site;
  • fence model;
  • color of the main structure.

The quantity, variation and modification of fastening elements depends on the material selected for construction. So for weighted options (metal, corrugated sheets), special brackets are needed to hold the structure, screws and rivets. Adequate fasteners are important to maintain the integrity of the material and securely hold it in place.

When choosing a material, you should decide which type is preferred. These can be open or closed structures. It is important to choose a lock for the gate, as well as calculate the number of entrance zones on the site. The purpose of the building is of no small importance. So for a summer cottage it is enough to use lightweight models of metal gates - made of chain-link, rods on metal frame etc. or wooden in the form of a wattle fence or lattice fence. An open type of fencing will allow sunlight and air to penetrate to the plants.

Capital suburban buildings require strong structures. As a rule, this is a solid wooden picket fence, stone, metal or combined structures.

Wickets made of corrugated sheets occupy a special place and are popular. They can be made of solid fabric or in the form of a picket fence, decorated with or without forging and are characterized by strength, lightness, and have a long service life, thanks to the polymer coating applied on top. When planning the arrangement of the entrance area, it is important to take into account the weight of the future structure. To ensure the safety of the gate and the convenience of its territory, and to protect visitors from adverse weather, a canopy can be installed.

A solid wooden gate would also be a good option. She represents wooden frame, covered with boards. Using a metal base in this case will strengthen but make the structure heavier.

There are many ways to decorate gates; elements of artistic forging deserve special attention. Forging goes well with wood, corrugated sheets or polycarbonate. The design can be with a round, triangular or straight top. Rounded designs look elegant.

Build a fence and install a gate

If you decide to install the gate yourself, then initial stage technology is no different from building a fence. Installation of support pillars occurs in predetermined locations.

The location, quantity and model are carefully considered. Stages of work:

  • supports are installed using the same type as for the fence;
  • the frame is made;
  • sheathed with pre-selected material;
  • the gate is mounted on the curtains;
  • if necessary, painted;
  • surveillance systems, warning systems, locks, deadbolts, etc. are installed.

If the gate is installed and the old one is not replaced, then the choice must be made taking into account the following recommendations and thought over:

  • convenience of approaches, both from the inside and from the outside;
  • reliable strengthening of support pillars, installation of additional ones intended exclusively for the gate;
  • opening on narrow streets, taking into account the convenience of neighbors.

Installation of support pillars is carried out at a deeper distance than the entire fence - this eliminates the fall and sagging of the structure, making it durable. This is usually about 1 meter deep. Sand and crushed stone are placed at the bottom of the prepared pit and compacted thoroughly. Then a support is installed, broken brick, crushed stone, etc. are used to fix it. Next, the pit is concreted - filled with a solution of cement and sand (1:3). It takes 1-2 days for the solution to harden. Regardless of what fence material is chosen, it is better to install the support posts from metal and, if desired, decorate them with stone or brick.

Preparing the design of the door itself must begin with calculating the size. It should fit freely into the opening between the support pillars. The width of the frame should correspond to the distance between them. The height should be 20-30 cm less than the height of the supports. The optimal width is 1 meter and the height is about 2 meters. To add rigidity to the structure, it is necessary to attach an additional jumper from a pipe measuring 20*25mm.

Canopies are welded vertically to the frame; the distance between them must coincide with the fixtures on the support posts. When the gate is completely ready, it should hang freely, leaving about 2 cm of free space on the sides. It is necessary for smooth opening and closing. In the lower part, the technology requires leaving 15 cm. This is necessary so as not to damage the structure when frozen blocks of ice appear on the ground.

On already finished frame a pre-prepared corrugated sheet is attached or wooden plank. Fixing occurs along the perimeter and along the lintel in the case of corrugated sheets or in the center of each individual element when constructing a wooden gate. The corrugated sheet is fastened along each wave or through one wave with special self-tapping screws. The last thing that is done during construction is installing locks and painting the structure.

The gate using forged elements is original and fits any landscape ideas on the territory. Hand forging is financially expensive, as it requires special craftsmanship and manufacturing skills that only specialists possess.

Installation of locks

It is better to provide a place for a lock when welding the frame. Next, a hole is made along the contour of the solid gate leaf into which the lock core will be installed. On a metal structure, this work is carried out using a grinder, and on wooden ones, using a special tool for wood (a jigsaw or a drill attachment).

In the case of the forged version, the lock is attached in a place where there is no pattern. If necessary, all variations of gates made of different materials, except corrugated sheeting, are painted in pre-selected colors that match the shades available on the site.

It is possible to do the work on arranging the entrance area yourself if you first study possible options, pay attention to the videos and photos on the site, select and organically fit acceptable ones, adapting them to the style of the area adjacent to the house.

Increasingly, in private and suburban areas you can see gates made of metal profiles of a wide variety of shapes and sizes. This material has many advantages: strength, reliability, presentable appearance, long service life and low cost. Read below to learn how to make a gate from corrugated sheets yourself quickly and without extra costs.

How to choose the size of a gate made of corrugated sheets?

There are no strict mandatory standards or restrictions regarding the size of gates. However, when choosing them, you need to consider the following:

  1. The optimal width of a gate made of corrugated sheets is 1.0 m. This width of the opening allows you to easily bring furniture or other large items into the area. Moreover, if it is larger, this can lead to rapid wear of the hinges or skewing of the gate cloth.
  2. The height of the gate should not exceed 2.0 meters. If the fence around the site is high, then such a gate made of corrugated sheets will not look very good. In this case, in the opening between the support pillars above it, it is better to install additional crossbars with a metal profile insert. This will allow you not to overly weigh down the canvas of the gate itself.

Naturally, there are exceptions to these rules. For example, if your height or the height of someone in your family is above 2.0 meters, then making a gate from corrugated sheets high altitude will be simply necessary. However, you should not forget about using special hinges and strengthening the frame with additional cross members.

Installation of support pillars

The first and one of the most labor-intensive stages of work is the installation of support posts on which the metal profile gate will be supported, with your own hands. This is not difficult to do, but it will take a lot of time, especially if we're talking about about brickwork.

There are two options for installing a fence made of profiled sheets. The first and simplest is the option of attaching the fence to poles made of metal pipes dug into the ground. In the second option, a fence with a gate and a wicket made of corrugated sheets is attached to pillars made of brick or stone.

Using metal support posts

The use of profiled sheets for the manufacture of entrance groups has become so widespread because making wickets and gates from corrugated sheets is very simple and inexpensive. Therefore, in the vast majority of cases, metal pipes are used as supports. They are much easier, cheaper and faster to install than brick ones.

Best suited for gate support posts profile pipe 80x80 mm with a wall thickness of 3-4 mm. To install them, holes are dug in the ground with a size of at least 300x300 mm and a depth of at least 1.0 m.

The depth of the holes depends on the type of soil where the pillars are installed. If the soil is rocky, then 70 cm will be enough. But if the soil is clayey, the depth of the holes should be no less than the freezing depth of the soil. In most regions middle zone this is 1.2 m.

be careful

Installing a gate made of corrugated sheets on insufficiently deepened pillars in heaving soil leads to serious deformities frames and canvases, the correction of which is often impossible.

Support pillars made of brick or stone

In this case, the dimensions of the foundation must be larger than the cross-section of the support column. Typically, such pillars are made of 1.5 bricks, that is, 390x390 mm. Therefore, the foundation must be no smaller than 500x500 mm. Since it is much more difficult to make such posts for a gate from corrugated sheets yourself, this option is chosen less often.

By her own brickwork does not withstand bending loads well, so to give the pole additional strength, a metal pipe is installed in the hole before pouring the foundation with concrete. Around it the masonry is made of brick or stone. Metal embeds are welded to the same pipe, which are removed outside the masonry. Gates and wickets made of corrugated sheets will subsequently be installed on them.

The top of metal support posts should be capped to prevent moisture from entering the post. If you plan to install lamps near the gate, then before concreting the pillars in them, you need to tighten the wire in a corrugated pipe.

Preparing parts for the frame

While the concrete mixture in the foundations of the support pillars gains the necessary strength, you can start assembling the gate itself. Before you make a gate from corrugated sheets with your own hands, you need to make a frame for it.

For the frame they take profile pipe 40x40 mm or 60x30 mm. A light small gate can also be made from a 40x20 pipe, but then to give the frame the necessary rigidity, the pipe must be placed with its narrow side facing the corrugated sheet metal sheathing.

A layer of crushed stone is poured into the bottom of the pit and thoroughly compacted. Then the pillars are installed strictly vertically, using a level, and the hole is filled with concrete mixture. Gates and gates made from metal profiles can be hung on concreted pipes no sooner than after 5-6 days. This time is necessary for the concrete to gain at least 20-30% of its strength.

In order to avoid mistakes when preparing parts, before cutting the pipe it is better to first draw a sketch or make a drawing of a gate made of corrugated sheets with all the necessary dimensions. An example of such a drawing is given below.

Detailed drawing metal profile gates

The prepared pipe is cleaned of rust using a metal brush and cut into pieces of the required length. To assemble, the edges of the workpieces are cut at an angle of 45°.

In addition, in order to make a gate from corrugated sheets, it is necessary to cut one or two crossbars, depending on its height, which should fit closely between the large sides of the frame. This will make the structure more rigid and subsequently make it easier to install the lock.

Welding the gate frame

The workpieces are connected to each other by welding. To prevent the frame from being deformed, before making a gate from corrugated sheets, the blanks need to be made from profile pipe secure in homemade conductor.

It's very easy to make:

  1. Take an OSB sheet with a thickness of at least 10 mm or a sheet of thick plywood.
  2. A canvas is cut out of it, the width and height of which must be at least 50 mm larger than the planned dimensions of the gate.
  3. Clamps are prepared that will hold the frame elements, pressing the metal profiles to the surface of the sheet. There should be twice as many clamps as welds.

Before welding a gate from corrugated sheets, all angles are carefully checked and the diagonals of the frame are measured. One or two crossbars are installed between the upper and lower lintels of the gate frame. Then clamps are installed, which should be located a short distance from the welding site.

Scheme of how to weld a gate from corrugated sheets using a jig from OSB boards and clamps

After fixing all the frame elements on the jig, you need to once again check the angles and parallelism of the opposite sides of the frame. Then you can start welding. In this case, the clamps cannot be removed until the seams have completely cooled down - otherwise, temperature stresses in the metal can deform and even destroy the metal. After welding is completed, all joints are cleaned.

Thanks to this welding technology, even a complete beginner can make a gate from a corrugated sheet with his own hands. At the same time, even if you have some experience in welding, I do not recommend neglecting the fixation of the workpiece. Remember that making a new frame after accidental damage to the old one will take longer and will cost more than making a simple jig.

On small summer cottages Gates with a wicket made of corrugated sheets are often installed. All operations for assembling the wicket frame built into the door leaf are performed in the same way as those described above. The design of the gate is subject to change, in which an opening must be provided for installation. In addition, the need to build in a gate imposes certain restrictions on its height.

Installation of fittings on metal profile gates

After assembling the gate frame, but before covering the frame with a metal profile, hinges and plates are welded to the gate for installing a lock and handle, if necessary.

Hinges for gates made of corrugated sheets are installed towards each other and grab welded seams 1-2 cm long. The hinges are placed so that the canvas cannot be removed after final installation. With this installation, the gate can only be cut with a grinder. Attach the loops at a distance of 25-30 cm from the upper and lower edges of the canvas.

Installation of hinges on a gate made of corrugated sheets

When choosing a lock for a gate made of corrugated sheets, you must pay attention to the operating conditions specified by the manufacturer in the passport. The lock must be designed For outdoor installation . When choosing a lock core, preference should be given to those that can be opened from the inside without a key. This will save you from problems if the water in the castle freezes in winter.

When opening the door inward, the lock can be either mortise or overhead. If the gate opens outwards, only a mortise lock is placed on it. The lock and handle for a gate made of corrugated sheets are usually installed at a height of approximately 90 cm.

Of the mortise locks, the most convenient are special ones. narrow profile locks, intended for installation in profile pipes. The very principle of their installation partially protects them from moisture and dust, which increases their service life.

Narrow-profile lock for a gate made of corrugated sheets

Before cutting the lock into a gate made of corrugated sheets, you need to mark the location for its installation: a rectangular slot for the body and a circle for the core. In addition, it is better to immediately mark the attachment points for the handle. Next, the installation process is quite simple:

  1. Using a grinder, cuts are made along the long sides.
  2. Using a drill, holes are drilled along the short sides as close to each other as possible. It is necessary to drill not along the marking strip itself, but slightly inside the rectangle.
  3. To install a mortise lock in a gate made of corrugated sheets, the hole is brought to the desired shape using a file.
  4. Round holes for the core are cut out using a metal burr. If it is not available, you can also use contour drilling and finishing with a file.
  5. Holes for mounting screws are drilled.
  6. The area around the lock is cleaned of rust, primed and painted.
  7. The lock is installed on a gate made of corrugated sheets, but without linings - they are installed after the frame has been covered.

This completes the installation of the lock into the frame. However, since putting a lock on a gate made of corrugated sheets is only half the battle, the work does not end there. It is necessary to install the counter part into the support column. This stage is performed after installing the gate on the posts.

A clear example of how to insert a lock into a gate made of corrugated sheets (click to enlarge)

Additionally, a lock or latch can be installed on the gate made of corrugated sheets. Such solutions make sense both from the point of view of increasing safety and for convenience - especially if the gate is often used. In this case, it is easier to close it with a latch than to fiddle with the lock every time. You can also immediately purchase a lock with a latch and not install it separately.

How to install a gate made of corrugated sheets on support posts?

After several days have passed, the concrete mixture in the foundations of the support pillars has gained some of its strength, and the assembly of the frame is completed, you can install the gate from corrugated sheets.

To do this, place a wooden block under the frame. Using a level, the gate is set strictly vertically and the places where the second halves of the hinges are attached are marked on the support post. It must be remembered that for normal opening in winter time, the canvas should be 100 mm higher than the surface of the track. Especially if you are installing a gate to a dacha made of corrugated sheets, where snow is rarely cleared in winter.

Having marked the installation locations of the hinges, they are temporarily attached to the support posts using electric welding. After checking the opening and closing of the gate, the hinges are welded with a continuous seam.

Consider

Installing a gate made of corrugated sheets with your own hands requires care and repeated double-checking, since without a “fresh look” from the outside it is easy to make a mistake.

If the gate is installed correctly, it should not open or close spontaneously. To prevent it from opening in both directions, a limiter is welded to the support opposite the hinges.

When the welding work is completed, all seams are cleaned using an angle grinder, and rust is removed from the frame and primed. Then they are painted twice with metal paint for exterior use. The main part of the lock installed in the frame must be covered with film or construction tape.

Metal profile gate frame mounted on poles

This is the penultimate stage before sewing, since you need to install a lock on the gate made of corrugated sheets and in the support post. To do this, the bolt is smeared with toothpaste and the lock is closed. After this, the place where the locking device should go will be marked on the pole.

If the lock is simple and there is no receiving block, then you just need to drill a hole of the desired shape and finish it with a file. If there is a receiving block, then you must first mark its location based on the location where the crossbar enters, and then, again, drill a hole of the desired shape. Then holes for fasteners are drilled and the mating part is installed.

Sewing a gate made of corrugated sheets

After the paint has dried, the gate canvas is sewn up with a profiled sheet. As a rule, wall corrugated sheeting C-20 or C-21 with a thickness of 0.5-0.6 mm is used for this. The use of sheets with a lower wave height is not recommended.

To fasten the corrugated sheets, roofing screws are used, less often - special rivets. Sometimes bolted connections are used for this, but this is not recommended, since in this case it does not ensure necessary protection from corrosion for the web at the point where the bolt passes through the corrugated sheet. The sheets are fastened through each wave horizontally and into each transverse beam vertically.

The simplest gate made of corrugated sheets is a rectangular frame made of profile or round steel pipe, onto which a metal profiled sheet is attached. Such a gate is perfect for a fence made of corrugated sheets - it will fit especially well into the usual blind fencing of a summer cottage or personal plot. Not a bad solution, look

Any fence must have an entrance. Gates are made for the entry of cars, and wickets for the passage of people. They are made on a frame made of wood or metal, the filling is selected the same as in the fence or something original. If the entrance is between two brick walls, you can choose the filling to your liking. Moreover, making a gate with your own hands is not so difficult, at least there are some simple options.

Device

The gate consists of supporting pillars and a door leaf on a frame, which is attached to the pillars using hinges. The pillars can be brick (stone), wood or metal. When laying bricks, small pieces of thick metal or a thick metal rod are walled up into bricks, to which the frame is subsequently welded.

Metal poles are made from round or profiled pipes with thick walls. Round pipes are used less and less: it is more difficult to weld or attach anything to them. A profiled pipe with the same cross-section (diagonal compared to diameter) and wall thickness can withstand high wind loads; it is easier to weld or fasten to flat edges using self-tapping screws and bolts. Therefore, it is increasingly used when installing gates. Another option is to weld a metal corner to the frame made of a profile pipe. In this case, the filling will appear as if in a frame.

Wooden posts are usually used if. Most often, the pillars are pine beams treated with protective impregnations. They prevent (or slow down) the destruction of wood. But there are also cases when the poles are made of metal, but the gate and fence are made of wood. This is because wood in the ground quickly rots, even after protective treatment.

A little about the design of the support frame. It can simply be two pillars dug into the ground - this option is suitable if the soil is not prone to heaving (sand, sandy loam, fertile but not clayey soils).

For heaving soils (clay, loams), it is desirable that the pillars be connected at the top and bottom. In this case, the likelihood of the gate skewing after winter is very small. If you do not want to make a threshold in the opening, the lower lintel can be lowered below ground level (by a bayonet and a half). It will need to be thoroughly coated with an anti-corrosion compound, primed, and painted in several layers. And to avoid distortion, you should bury the pillars below the freezing level by at least 15-20 cm.

The frame of the gate is made from metal pipe or wooden blocks. Wood is used for wooden fences, metal - in all other cases.

With a frame made of a profile pipe with corrugated sheets, metal...

Perhaps the most universal version of a gate is with a frame made of a profile pipe or a metal corner. You can attach any filling material to a metal base: wood, sheet metal, corrugated board, flat slate, polycarbonate, chain-link mesh, metal rods, forged or bent elements... make a combination of several materials. There are a lot of options; if you want to make a gate, they usually mean a square pipe, and the design is chosen in the same style as the fence.

Frame made of profile pipe. Filling - cold forging and wood

Dimensions and materials

For a gate with a solid filling (wood, sheet metal, corrugated sheets, etc.), for the pillars take a profiled pipe with a cross-section of 60*60*3 mm. You can use thicker walls, but it’s better not to use thinner ones. For the frame, a rectangular pipe 40*20*2.5 mm is usually used. The strength of this pipe is sufficient for medium wind loads. For light wind loads, you can take a 2 mm wall, but it will be more difficult to weld. . If the winds are stronger, you can either increase the wall thickness, or use a larger section: 40*30 or 40*40, even 40*60.

The height of a gate with an upper crossbar is usually about two meters, without a crossbar - from 1.2 m. Low ones are usually made in internal fences delimiting the site or in translucent low external fences. For blind high wood, flat slate, the height at the fence level is more typical. The width of the gate is minimum 90 cm, optimal 100-110 cm.

It’s also worth talking about how deep to bury the pillars. Standard solution - 15-20 cm below the freezing depth. Based on this number and the height of the gate, the pillars are made.

We put an emery wheel on the angle grinder (grinder grinder) for metal, clean all welding points, removing rust, etc. By the way, it’s more convenient to do all this when the gate is in place. If you remove it, it will not be so convenient to work, you will have to turn it over, walk around it in circles...

To prevent the frame of the gate from peeling for a long time, we will treat it with a rust converter, then with a primer. Next, you can attach the corrugated sheet. It needs to be cut to size and tried on.

And this is the final result: we decided to make a gate, we did it...

You will definitely have to cut somewhere to make everything open. Therefore, to begin with, we attach the cut sheet literally to four self-tapping screws - in the corners, make marks - where to cut what, remove it, cut it, try it on again. When you have achieved normal operation, you can fasten it “forever.”

Wooden gate for a summer residence

Fences at dachas rarely represent an impregnable barrier. Usually these are not too high wooden fences. For such a fence it makes sense to make a gate made of wood. There is a very simple one, no fuss. Only dry boards will be needed (provided that there are already pillars).

If you don’t have woodworking machines (thicknesser, router), it’s easier to buy an edged board with the required parameters. The width/thickness of the boards is arbitrary, as are the distances between the planks. Most often they use a pine board 6-10 cm wide and about 2 cm thick, the distance between the planks is 2-6 cm. More or less is possible - it depends on the desired degree of “transparency”.

It is advisable to have dry boards. It’s unlikely that anyone will use a drying chamber, but aged for a couple of years or at least six months or a year (humidity about 25%) is already excellent. To prevent wood from deteriorating longer, it must be treated with protective impregnations. Now there are compounds that protect even wood that lies on the ground (protective impregnations for wood in direct contact with the ground). But some of them give the wood an extraneous tint (most often greenish, olive). If you are going to paint the gate, it's not a big deal. If you are planning to use a light varnish, pay attention to this point.

Simple garden gate

This is the simplest gate that can be made a common person, not a carpenter. If you know how to saw, hold a hammer, and hammer nails, everything will work out. You don't have to do anything more complicated.

Take two planks or two beams (parameters depend on the weight of the gate). They are equal in length to the width of the future gate. These bars are laid across. The distance between them is slightly less than the height of the gate. It makes sense to place them at the same distance as the bowstrings on the adjacent fence (as in the photo above). Then the gate will look like part of the ensemble.

Treated and dried picket boards are laid out at a given distance on the crossbars. To make it easier to maintain distances, you can use scraps of the same length, laying them between the boards (you can also use a matchbox if you are satisfied with its size). We take nails (two per plank at the top and two at the bottom) and attach the boards to each cross member.

After all the slats are nailed, we turn the gate canvas over, try on the jib, and draw the lines along which the jib should be cut. We saw off the excess with a hacksaw, put it in place, fasten it - two or three nails on both sides. Now we attach each board to the slope. This gives the wicket additional rigidity.

We choose metal hinges, or barn hinges. They are small in size, just for country gates. If desired, they are attached to the front part of the gate - they add some zest. You can just as easily secure them from the back.

How to make a gate from boards: the correct design

A simple garden and dacha option is described above, but there is a more complex and reliable design. This requires minimal carpentry skills: it is assembled using a tongue/groove connection. This wooden gate consists of two thicker strapping slats, two crossbars (top and bottom) and a strut. The thickness of the upper crossbars and pickets (vertical slats) is the same, but the thickness of the strapping slats is three times greater (thicker is possible, thinner is not). For example, pickets, crossbars and miters have a thickness of 20 mm, strapping slats - 60 mm.

A groove is cut in the strapping slats, and a tenon is cut at the ends of the crossbars. The joint is coated with wood glue and clamped in a vice. The bevel can also be installed - on a tongue and groove, but it turns out to be of a complex shape and falls on the joint. Therefore, more often it is simply attached to nails - it’s easier. After the frame is assembled, pickets are nailed. They can be nailed from the yard side or from the street side. Instead of nails, you can use bolted connections; in this case, the fasteners also serve as decoration. It makes sense to install stainless or bronze rivets.

Photos of beautiful gates

Making a gate that is not ordinary, but beautiful is not so difficult. And this does not always require expensive materials. What is always needed is imagination. Then even a bicycle, a shovel, a knot or a pickaxe is a material for exclusive design.

Of the most different materials...even from knots

Wood and forged elements - a win-win combination

The main component is fantasy

Even a gate made of corrugated sheets can be original

The first thing guests see before entering a private area is the gate. The taste of the owner of the property is often judged by its external design; it sets the tone for the first impression. And the first impression, as you know, is remembered on a subconscious level. How to make a gate beautiful and functional?

Difficulty of choice

Before thinking about how to make a gate in a fence, you should decide on the type of material and the method of artistic design of this product.

Scheme for installing a gate in a fence

As a rule, the material used to make the gate is the same as that used to install the entire fence. But in some cases exceptions are possible. The choice is influenced by many factors on which the final result directly depends.

In addition, any material has its pros and cons. You need to carefully weigh the pros and cons when choosing the material and style of the gate.

Example of a sheet metal gate

You should also take into account the wishes of the owner of the house:

  • Is it necessary for the gate to be transparent (so you can see who has approached it);
  • Is there a need to embed a lock inside the body of the gate;
  • Is it planned to be used in winter?
  • It is necessary to install one or more gates.

The answers to these questions will help you decide on the type of gate.

Garden gates

As mentioned above, garden gates are usually very simple products that you can even make with your own hands.

The country gate must perform the main functions:

  • Open freely in the summer, when the intensity of its operation is especially high;
  • If possible, do not block sunlight from plants growing nearby;
  • Do not be too heavy to avoid distortions and frequent repairs.

Based on all of the above, garden gates represent the maximum simple designs. The materials most often used are wood or.

Wooden gate

The simplest option for a homemade gate is to use wooden slats and boards to make it. Wooden gates have a number of advantages:

  • Easy to manufacture and install. you can even do it yourself;
  • Environmental friendliness of the material. Wood - absolutely natural material, it will not cause any harm to human health;
  • Long service life. With a responsible approach to the manufacturing process and careful care, the product can last for many years;
  • Variability. You can build both a transparent gate and a solid closed version from wood.

However, do not forget that wood has an increased fire hazard.

Several options for wooden fence gates

The surface of the wood also requires constant painting: this helps to extend the life of the gate and maintain its attractive appearance.

Chain-link gate

Chain-link mesh is an affordable material, very popular for use in dachas. To make a chain-link gate, you need to weld a frame from a metal corner and secure the mesh around its perimeter.

Such a gate does not interfere with the penetration of sunlight into the area and allows you to freely view the territory.

The owner of the dacha always sees who has approached the gate. The smaller the grid cells, the more likely it is that no one will penetrate the territory.

Simple and reliable gates

If the owner of the site values reliability, rather than simplicity, in a gate, then the choice arises between several options. Wooden gates with a continuous filling of the surface of the product can be considered very reliable.

An example of a simple gate made of corrugated sheets

Such a door will be very heavy and cumbersome, so it is worth thinking in advance about a strong design for connecting the parts of the gate. Typically, a solid wooden gate is a timber frame covered with boards.

Another option is a gate made of corrugated sheets. It is also made of a frame, which is covered with corrugated board. Such a gate can also have a edging in the form of a profile or strip along the edge. The use of edging improves the appearance of the product and allows you to strengthen the structure.

Wicket made of corrugated sheets

Corrugated sheeting is quite often used as a fence material. The popularity of its use is explained by a number of advantages.

Despite all the advantages, this material also has negative sides. Not everyone finds corrugated sheeting attractive in appearance and categorically refuses to use it. Many people also don’t like the fact that the material is used too widely and can be found everywhere.

Artistically designed gates

For special connoisseurs of beauty, there are many options for artistic design of the entrance area of the site.

An original design option for a gate with forged elements

The design can be made of the simplest materials, but differ from the standard rectangular shape. The semicircular top of the gate and gate looks quite elegant. It is possible to use more complex shapes and curved lines in the design of the gate, however, it should be remembered that such work requires certain knowledge and skills, so it is unlikely that you will be able to create such a product with your own hands.

One of the most common options. From forged metal the entire wicket or part of it can be manufactured. Sometimes forging plays the role of a frame for the main cladding material. The main material, by the way, can be anything. Forging goes well with wood, corrugated sheets, metal, and polycarbonate.
Carved wooden gates look very attractive. It is possible to register an entrance to rustic style or in the style of an Alpine chalet.

How to make a fence and gate with your own hands

Making a fence and gate with your own hands is not that difficult. After choosing the type of design, you just need to:

  • Decide on the location of the gate;
  • Make a frame and cover it with base material;
  • Install the gate on it as well.

Let's talk about everything in order in more detail.

Selecting a location

If the gate is not installed in a finished fence instead of an old one, then it is useful to take into account the following recommendations:

  • Choose a location for installing the gate, taking into account convenient access to it both from the street and from the inside;
  • For ease of installation, many people hang wickets and gates on adjacent poles. It is important to take into account the weight of the structure: the support must support it without the risk of falling;
  • If the gate is too heavy weight, it is better to install additional supports for it;
  • Opening gates and gates to the outside is not always convenient for your neighbors. This is especially true on narrow streets with one lane.

If necessary, you can install two gates: for the central entrance and as an additional exit.
