Wood is a fairly durable material, if it is regularly maintained, it will remain with its performance properties for a long time. When painting wood, it is necessary to take into account its properties. If the paint is applied too thickly, then the wood cannot “breathe”, and even if the humidity is low, microorganisms will develop that destroy the wood. Solve what kind of paint do i need to paint my house, is very important, since the period during which the material will serve depends on this choice.

Alkyd paint has excellent water-repellent characteristics, so it is used for painting objects located on the street. However, such paint fails to penetrate deep into the wood structure. A kind of protective film is formed on the surface, so it cannot be said that the coating will be very durable. Of all the colors it is very important to choose what is the best way to paint a country house.

Acrylic compositions more stably endure the effects of the elements. They are more wear-resistant and durable, but the cost of such paint is an order of magnitude higher. In addition, it contains toxic components, so its use indoors is practically impossible. You can use it here, but only with caution.

  • Tip: When storing paint, it is very important to observe the storage regime, since even the slightest violation can cause it to deteriorate.

When choosing paint, it is very important to consider many conditions. First of all, whether the coating will be affected by atmospheric influences. It is imperative to take into account the type of wood: usually, in order to create load-bearing structures, coniferous varieties of trees are used, and in order to finish and build a small structure - deciduous. It is very important to take into account that reprocessing will be performed. In the event that not the first painting is performed, it is necessary to take into account what features the previous layer has. You need to select a paint that has similar characteristics.

Without preliminary preparation of the surface, the paint will lie in an uneven layer, and then quickly begin to crumble.

In order to clean, you can use various chemical solvents and washes that can be bought at hardware stores. Before using them, you need to carefully study the instructions on the package.

In order to fulfill mechanical cleaning You can use a spatula or grinder. After removing the old coating, if necessary, the surface is puttied using special compounds for wood. In addition, you can use a powerful building hair dryer. First, small areas are heated up, and then the old paint is removed, for which a spatula and rags are used.

Before painting glued laminated timber, it is necessary to carefully remove old paint, dust and dirt from it. The prepared surface is covered with two layers of primer or drying oil. After applying the first layer, you need to wait for it to dry completely, and only then apply the second. If the surface is well prepared and primed, there is a significant reduction in paint consumption, and the painted wood will look much lighter. In order to paint the surface, you can use a paint brush, roller or spray gun. Both inside and outside, a wooden house needs to be painted in two layers. After the first coat has been applied, wait at least twenty-four hours before re-painting.

When painting old wooden surfaces, the primer should be chosen very carefully. It must have a deep penetrating action to fill all the pores of the wood. The primer is applied only after the surfaces have been thoroughly cleaned and sanded.

  • Tip: Inside the house you can paint at any time of the year, and outside - only when the weather is dry and warm outside.

Before you start painting a wooden house from the outside, it must be carefully primed. This is done in order to prevent the formation of mold, blue, rot on the wooden surface. In addition, the primer penetrates the wood much deeper than the paint compositions, therefore it prevents it from cracking, drying out, and also serves as an excellent link between the wood and the finish coat.

An antiseptic primer can be oil-based or alkyd-based. If an oil primer is chosen as the base, it is better to take the top coat also based on oil and preferably from the same manufacturer. The alkyd composition is quite versatile and more affordable.

How to paint the facade of a wooden house

When the surface is primed and everything is perfectly dry, you can proceed to the final painting. To do this, you will need decorative and protective compounds, which are sold in a large assortment in any store for builders.

Glazing compositions perfectly penetrate deep into the wood, form a resistant and colored coating, and emphasize the structure of the tree. Most companies add a UV filter to the composition, which prevents color fading even if the facade is facing the sunny side.

If the house is located in a strip where the sun is especially intense, then it is recommended to choose impregnations of a darker color: walnut, mahogany, rosewood, teak. Then the painted wood will retain its shade longer.

Provided that the tree is pre-primed and then painted with decorative and protective compounds, the guarantee for the durability of such a coating will be about 7 years. It is better to choose already proven brands: Tikkurila, Pinotex and Belinka have existed on the Russian and world markets for many years. These firms produce priming antiseptics and decorative compounds for outdoor painting. wooden houses.

If you still want to save a little, you should choose Aquatex or Texturol. These are compositions from Russian manufacturers, which also proved to be excellent in operation and operation.

You should not spoil the tree with oil paints, which are very attractive in price. After a couple of years, such a coating will simply begin to climb around and you will have to repeat all the work from the beginning. And in terms of money and labor costs, savings do not work at all.

Any wood, as well as its "derivatives", which are one of the most used building and finishing materials, despite all their remarkable qualities, they also have disadvantages that impose certain requirements on exterior finish such buildings. Their main enemies are moisture (and its companions mold and fungus) and insects (woodworms).

Without proper protection wooden elements It is impossible to ensure a long period of operation of the house without frequent repairs.

Talking about painting wooden structure, you need to understand that the external and interior decoration- things are different. External walls from the side of the street, they experience all the surprises of the weather: sun, wind, rain, snow, pressure drops, temperature and humidity. Therefore, the choice of paints and varnishes should be made taking into account all these features of operation ().

Types of paints used

Oily

They win, basically, only in price. Although there are a number of advantages. Paints based on drying oil penetrate deeply into the structure of the material, and are resistant to changes in external atmospheric conditions.

But keep in mind that the surface painted by them will have to be “updated” every 4 to 5 years (depending on local conditions). In addition, they fade quite quickly, especially if applied on the sunny side of the house.

They also differ in terms of application. The fact is that the drying time of oil paints (depending on the temperature outside) is several hours. And given that the air always contains particles of dust, then you need to “guess” also windless weather. Otherwise, as often happens, some places will have to be tinted.

Acrylic

These have all the necessary qualities that are needed specifically for wood.

  • Firstly, they do not create an airtight layer, so after applying them, the log or board continues to “breathe”.
  • Secondly, even hardened paint has some elasticity. Therefore, as the “wood” is deformed, the layer of such a paintwork will not crack.
  • Thirdly, they retain their appearance for 7-8 years, and this is exactly the approximate period when cosmetic repairs are made to any building.

Covering antiseptic

Such compositions have an alkyd-acrylate base. In the market of paints and varnishes - relatively the new kind similar products. With their help, even low-grade wood can be given a respectable look, which allows the use of cheaper materials in construction. Such compositions "keep" for more than 10 years.

It should be understood that any paint will completely hide the texture of the wood. Staining is done, as a rule, if the house is finished with a simple smooth-planed board. But if the walls are built from expensive material (calibrated log, and the like), then there is no point in using paint. Otherwise, the money spent on the material (wood) will literally be “thrown to the wind”.

For such blanks, it is advisable to use colorless varnishes, azure. The surface will become glossy, which will only add to the attractiveness of the house. The use of colored varnishes will not affect the pattern of the wood in any way, but will somewhat change the shade of the surface.

The cost of paints depends not only on their composition. Even the same one can have a different price, as this is also affected by its color.

According to the cost of paint are divided into:

  • economy class trains (budget), the cost of which is not more than 100 rubles / kg. These include "Texturol", "Aquatex", "Senezh" and a number of others;
  • Tikkurila, Belinka - compositions of average cost (within 200 - 300 rubles / kg);
  • "Premium" - 350 rubles / kg and more. For example, Johnestones, Dulux, Woodworks.

  • During the initial painting of a new house, the choice of paint and varnish is at the discretion of the owner. But if staining is repeated, then it is recommended to use the same composition that was used previously. That is, apply “oil” to oil, “acrylic” to acrylic. Masters say that the latter can also be laid on top of oil ones with preliminary surface treatment.
  • To determine the type of old paint and varnish composition, it is enough to make a small cut of it. If the "pattern" breaks easily, then it was oil paint. The acrylate layer easily rolls into a "roll".
  • Coloring is not recommended. wooden surfaces if they are exposed to sunlight. This will lead to uneven drying of individual sections, and as a result - "stains" on the wall.
  • When choosing a paintwork composition of a little-known manufacturer, it is worth asking what year this particular type of paint has been produced? It is somewhat strange when newfangled products are guaranteed 15 years of “service”, although their release was launched only 2-3 years ago. Therefore, this has not been confirmed in practice.
  • Do not forget that no paint will increase the life of wood if it has not been pre-treated with antiseptics and fire retardants, and the surface has not been primed.
  • When choosing a specific composition, you need to pay attention to its resistance to ultraviolet radiation, as well as to the approximate consumption (per 1 m2). It is different for different colors. Therefore, the matter is not only in the price for 1 can, but also in their required quantity.

Wooden houses look interesting. However, the material from which they are made, in contact with moisture, may collapse in short term. Therefore, it is necessary to paint a wooden house outside before putting the building into operation, as well as painting it at certain intervals during operation.

What materials are needed?

To protect wood from precipitation, sunlight and the possible appearance of fungi, it is better to use a complex application of finishing materials from RENNER (Italy). You will definitely need an antiseptic, mastic for the ends and the paint itself. Experts recommend using a water-based material as a finishing layer.

In what order should coatings be applied?

At the first stage, an antiseptic is applied. Since this coating is quite liquid, it can penetrate deep into the wood to create an extensive protective layer. It will protect the tree from white rot, fungi, blue stain.

Since the antiseptic is not a stable coating, it can be washed out by rain falling on it. To prevent such an undesirable consequence, a finishing layer is used. It is recommended to apply in 3 layers.

The technology of painting a wooden house outside

In order for the painting of a wooden house outside with your own hands to be quick and without problems, and the result to please for many years, you need to properly prepare the surface. This is done by sanding the wood.

It allows you to level the surface and remove the old layer (grinding grain sizes should be from 80 to 100 units). The quality of the polishing depends on how deeply the antiseptic penetrates, because during the grinding work, the pores of the wood open.

Next, an antiseptic is applied. This will require a brush. When applying, do not leave untreated areas, the entire surface is abundantly wetted with a solution. This layer will dry for about 3 hours. When it dries, it is necessary to process the wood to remove the pile.

This need is due to the fact that the pile in this situation will act as a capillary and conduct water that has fallen on the wall inside. If this happens, the paintwork materials will begin to flake off.

The next step is to apply mastic for the ends. By its density, the material resembles liquid sour cream. It is applied with a brush, and then smeared over the surface. How to do this, you can see the video. The mastic will dry for about 3 hours.

At the end, the main paint and varnish material is applied. For convenience, it is better to pour it into a small container. The water-based material is applied in 2 - 3 layers. So many layers are required for protection to be valid for at least five years. Dry the surface between each application. Drying time is at least 2 hours. If you choose the RENNER finishing material, then as each subsequent layer is applied, the wall will change before your eyes.

In the sun, it will acquire an unobtrusive sheen, which all expensive Italian furniture has. You can choose any tone, giving the house a pleasant appearance corresponding to the design project. Numerous photos demonstrate the richness of the palette of this material. Therefore, many people believe that RENNER is the optimal paint for painting a wooden house on the outside.

If during the subsequent operation any shortcomings are revealed, you can clean this place of dust, sand it and apply another layer of coating.

The main mistakes when painting a wooden house

First of all, this is the wrong material. When using oil-based paints and varnishes, houses in difficult climatic conditions do not look the best after a couple of years. After all, the varnish under the influence of the sun and frost exfoliates and peels off in whole pieces. As a result, the wood remains defenseless and it is necessary to re-paint the old wooden houses from the outside, including all stages and work, including grinding.

If only an antiseptic was used for painting, it will last no more than six months. Then it is washed off and leaves the surface unprotected.

You should not paint the house under the scorching sun, because the paintwork material is poorly absorbed in such conditions. The result is a crust, and the penetration depth of the antiseptic is reduced from 3-5 mm to 1 mm.
