Our car critic Dmitry Perlin is an energetic and economic person, a long-time fan of pickups, so he looked forward to the test drive of the new Toyota Hilux with particular impatience and conducted it with particular scrupulousness. About the Japanese novelty, as well as about the unique features of our country that foreigners will never understand, and will be discussed.

In two and a half years, everyone involved in Toyota Motor Co. will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Hilux, which hit the assembly line in the spring of 1968. For almost 50 years of operation, Toyota Hilux has won the glory of an unpretentious, fantastically reliable, tenacious car that can be disabled only by hitting something very hard with a very strong blow. And it's not a fact that it will break Toyota. The dashing British from Top Gear not only beat the Hilux of the previous, seventh generation (produced from 2005 to 2014) against various objects, but also drowned it in the ocean, burned it, put it on the roof of the house, which was then blown up. And every time the Toyota pickup started up and left the place of execution on its own. Hilux’s off-road capabilities were also in order: cars reached the north pole of the planet, and to the south, and they crawl on them in Siberian mud, and in the sands of the deserts, the familiar silhouette with the TOYOTA inscription on the back of the body constantly appears, in reports from hot spots. At the same time, this car was relatively inexpensive to buy and not burdensome to maintain.

Because Hilux is so popular with owners country houses and homesteads, foresters and salesmen, farmers and armed groups of varying degrees of legality on all continents of the planet. However, time goes by, market needs change, competitors are on the alert. A few years ago, in this size class of pickups, equipment began to appear that was noticeably superior to the hard worker Toyota Hilux in terms of comfort, convenience for the driver and passengers, efficiency, and driving performance on well-surfaced roads, keeping up with the ability to overcome off-road and cargo transportation. In fact, in the main markets, there was a demolition of stereotypes that a pickup truck of this class is, first of all, a utility all-terrain vehicle, and only then everything else. The veteran, who had been on the assembly line for 10 years, began to lose ground, Toyota Motor was obliged to respond to the challenges of the time.

And here we have the answer. Toyota Hilux new, eighth generation.

Don't expect revolutions from the Japanese. Especially from Toyota, whose management system, TPS (Toyota Production System), is based on traditional Japanese values, among which there is no haste, no denial of the experience of ancestors, no following fashion trends if they are not appropriate. So the appearance of the new Hilux has not undergone any revolutionary changes. It is still dictated by the purpose of the car, and therefore recognizable and harmonious. Huge ground clearance, over 20 cm, raised high, "undercut" front bumper to provide a large angle of entry and reduce the chance of damage.

A similar picture is in the rear view.

The "feed" of the pickup is raised high. This was also done not by chance, and not to give the appearance of the car dynamism, but to provide a larger departure angle so as not to catch on the rear of the body when storming hilly, uneven terrain. Along the way, we notice a rear-view camera on the tailgate.

Now under the car.

Continuous rear axle, spring suspension, powerful ladder-type frame - a classic of the pickup genre. By the way, the Japanese said that the frame of the new Hilux has become even stronger and more rigid in torsion. Much tougher if the guys from Top Gear couldn’t blow up the old one with ammunition. But this is rather to ensure the best driving performance, which we will check. For now, let's continue our study.

This photo clearly shows the transfer case of an all-wheel drive transmission, with cardan shafts coming out of it, and a black box on its body. Previously, there were no such boxes on handouts. The fact is that on all Hilux up to the seventh generation, inclusive, all operations for connecting the front axle and switching on the downshift were performed by the driver manually, with the transfer case control lever, with which he was mechanically connected. On the new Toyota pickup truck, all manipulations with the all-wheel drive transmission are no longer performed by a lever, but by a rotary selector that switches the operating modes of the transfer case with electric drives. And here is a block of electric actuators, a black box, we can see in the photo. By the way, both the “razdatka” itself and the electric drive control unit are placed very competently, high, protected by the pickup frame, and the wiring goes straight up into the cab to reduce the likelihood of both mechanical damage and dirt and moisture.

The fuel tank (in the next photo) is also protected. It is closed by a powerful profiled plate.

However, if the car is planned to be used on extreme off-road conditions, one cannot do without special protective equipment that securely closes the tank and the aggregate part above the frame, within the wheelbase and in front.

Regular tools, such as a steel grille for protecting the engine compartment with a mudguard, will help out in 100% of cases of ordinary off-road use. Well, the front suspension, although it is independent, spring, double wishbones, is also a classic of the pickup and all-terrain vehicle genre. How it works, we will also check.

Now "let's go to the bins", that is, to the cargo platform.

We measure its length to the side, the length with the side folded down, the height of the side and another important parameter, the width in the place between the wheel arches.

It turns out that the dimensions of the loading platform of the new Hilux have increased significantly compared to its predecessor. So, the height of the side increased by 3 cm, and the length of the additive was as much as 18 cm, reaching 157 cm to the tailgate and 212 cm with the tailgate folded down. Today Toyota Hilux has the longest cargo bed in the class.

What is interesting: by increasing the new Hilux in length by only 7 cm compared to its predecessor, leaving the wheelbase unchanged at 3085 mm (distance between the axles), Japanese layout engineers managed to significantly increase the length of the platform, without sacrificing cabin space.

But as for other dimensions and load capacity parameters, there is a technique in which the side height is 2-3 cm more, and the distance between the wheel arches is 11 cm, which allows you to fit two standard euro pallets on the platform. The load capacity of a Toyota pickup truck, which is a solid 760 kg for this configuration, still does not allow it to fight for leadership in the class in this parameter, there are cars in which it is 100-250 kg higher, but in terms of transporting long vehicles, the new Toyota Hilux is an absolute record holder .

It's time for us to look under the hood.

Under the hood of this car is a new Toyota turbodiesel engine with a displacement of 2.8 liters and a power of 177 hp. and a maximum torque of 450 Nm, which is held in the range of 1600-2400 rpm. The first thing that catches the eye of a techie is two batteries with a capacity of at least 70 Ah. Yes, Toyota has seriously worked on adapting the car to operation in cold climates, the supply of electricity on board is more than solid, enough to start the engine in cold weather and to power other consumers. The second is serious measures to soundproof the cabin. Insulating materials are completely wrapped around the hood, engine shield, and the space around the perimeter of the hood. The third is a large filler neck for washer fluid. With true Japanese attention to detail, it, of impressive size, was placed in the most convenient place for pouring, and you won’t miss even from a domestic 5-liter tub. And the location of the engine air intake is also noteworthy.

The air intake to power the power unit is not in front, but onboard, in the best traditions of the best all-terrain vehicles, in order to reduce the likelihood of water getting into it when crossing water barriers, which is extremely dangerous for the motor.

More about the gearbox, invisible in the photo, a few words. In this car, it is automatic, 6-band, with the possibility of manual shifting. In the initial and medium configurations, there is also a 6-speed “mechanics”, but it is aggregated only with a 2.4-liter turbodiesel.

Now you can go into the cockpit and figure it out.

And here… Not a trace remains of the former asceticism of the former Hilux. The interior, the driver’s workplace in the new Toyota pickup truck looks like it’s not a hard worker pickup truck, but an urban dandy RAV4, the interior of which is definitely similar to what was seen in the Hilux. Everything is exactly the same matched, assembled and adjusted with exceptional quality, only an abundance of blue tones in the color scheme of the instruments and the display on the center console can cause complaints, which is not approved by ergonomics science. The display, by the way, touch, seven-inch.

It responds vividly to touch and is located in such a way that you don’t have to reach for it either from the driver’s or passenger’s seats and the control of the trip computer and audio system is duplicated on the steering wheel.

Under the display is the second tier of controls, on which the already mentioned selector for selecting all-wheel drive transmission modes and the climate control panel are located.

And even lower are the keys for locking the cross-axle differential, which is now in the basic equipment of Hilux, the control of electronic assistants and the trajectory stabilization system. Turning the seat heating on and off the Japanese placed in the same place.

Everything is logically grouped, verified in terms of accessibility, frequency and ease of use, efforts on the controls. A two-section glove box, "glove compartment" in common parlance, that in front of the passenger is from the same category.

The same photo shows a tweeter and a large speaker of the audio system, the sound quality of which is perhaps the best that has ever been heard in pickups of different brands.

It is also very comfortable here, and the seats are well profiled, with noticeable lateral support. Not a trace remains of the former working "chairs". The only thing left in the front seats of the new Hilux is the mighty handrails for the passenger.

It is very convenient to hold on to them, climbing into the cab, and off-road, when the cab sways, rolls, and so on.

Let's move to the back row of seats.

The landing here is vertical, otherwise in pickups, where the cab ends behind the back of the back sofa, it does not work. In a number of pickups of other brands, this backrest is folding, and there is a small storage compartment behind it. And in Hilux compartments - under the cushion of the rear sofa. It is more convenient than with a back, but the capacity is small, and this is the lack of pickups in principle: if the body is not covered by anything, the travel luggage will have to be placed somehow in the cabin.

As for space, people up to 190 cm should have enough with a margin.

If the height is average, up to 180 cm, then it will be generally comfortable.

Well, we sorted out the materiel and interior, made sure that the functionality in the new Hilux is no worse than in the previous one, and in terms of the size of the cargo platform - a solid addition. In terms of comfort and convenience, there are improvements. Toyota Motor engineers completely changed the concept of the pickup cab, again without making any revolutions, they simply used layout, technical and ergonomic solutions proven on their other models. And only the current abundance of blue tones in the color scheme of instrumentation can cause serious criticism. Ergonomically blue color contributes to fatigue, reduced driver attention, the development of depressive states. In aviation, for example, this color is used only in one place, in a combined flight and navigation instrument, where you need to show the sky and the position of the aircraft relative to the horizon. However, a pickup truck is not a plane. And the speed is less, and the number of devices.

The only moment missed in the description of the Hilux cabin, which was not described earlier in other tests, and will not be described by us from now on, is the “quality of finishing materials”. From the point of view of a specialist, a finger stuck in Decoration Materials, a useless gauge of their quality and cost. If it is solid, it is not necessarily cheap, and it is absolutely not a fact that it is of poor quality. And to believe that if it is soft, then it will not creak over time, it is naive, because the installation of trim to the metal of body parts is not carried out by soft mates at all. And any owner of an old Hilux will confirm: the finish is made of hard plastic, and there are no squeaks even after 200,000 km or more.

And now - let's go. And for all types of coatings, and without them. Let's start with asphalt.

Toyota Hilux! Is that you? The surprise begins with the engine starting, because the cabin of the previous Hilux has never been so quiet. And in the entire range of operating speeds, at the peak of torque. Only when the tachometer needle goes beyond 2900 rpm, the dissatisfied grunt of the turbodiesel is clearly heard in the cabin. And in normal driving modes - silence, as well as the absence of vibrations in the cabin, which were noted in previous generations of the model, and this is with excellent engine traction in the range of 1700-2500 rpm, which the gearbox quickly supports.

The next reason for surprise comes in the first turn. Is that you, Toyota Hilux? Where are the rolls? Where is the "long" steering, with four cargo revolutions from lock to lock? In the new Hilux, it takes just over three turns of the steering wheel to turn the wheels between the stops, this pickup literally rushes into corners, prescribing them with the clarity of a well-tuned crossover, not a pickup. And almost without rolls, while allowing even hooligan traction rear axle, twisting into a turn. And the brakes are good, slowing down is understandable and pleasant. But it shakes. The price for the sharp “sharpening” of the chassis, which is a pleasure, was the rigidity when driving through small bumps on the asphalt, for example, its dried residues after repair. The rigidity is not critical, but noticeable, in comparison with the previous generation Hilux, which did not notice any irregularities, swallowing everything.

But these keys, next to the automatic transmission selector, help to adapt the pace of movement to city traffic

In Eco-Mode, the engine starts to work with partial output, the reaction to the “gas” pedal softens, it is very convenient to crawl in a traffic jam, move in dense and slow traffic. When you turn on Power-Mode, the motor-transmission is energized, the engine is kept at peak torque, the automatic transmission contributes to quick acceleration and this is very helpful when driving fast at city speeds. In highway driving modes, the Eco / Power system does not have a noticeable effect on the dynamics, Toyota Hilux drives confidently and quite economically “by default”. Here is the average consumption in city-highway mode, which was noted after 10 km in the city and about the same on the highway.

And this is a very worthy result for a two-ton pickup truck with a 177 hp turbodiesel engine.

Now let's start checking in the pampas. Older Hilux's were astounding in their suspension's amazing power output, allowing them to tumble down broken gravel roads at speeds few competitors can match. Did the beginner lose these abilities, having received excellent "asphalt" training?

However, he did not lose. Having shown itself to be harsh on small asphalt bumps, the new Toyota Hilux can also “bludgeon” on broken roads, calmly swallowing any troubles, like its ancestors, while handling just as well as on asphalt.

In general, Toyota Hilux - and "don't slow down when cornering." And also on potholes, rifts, broken primers.

And finally, off-road. We bring the pickup's off-road arsenal to full readiness by turning on all-wheel drive, downshifting and locking the rear cross-axle differential. The inclusion of the entire listed aggregate part is displayed on the dashboard with the corresponding symbols.

When the rear differential lock is turned on, all auxiliary and insurance electronics are turned off, even ABS, because off-road, and with all the arsenal turned on, they are not so needed.

Check out the fantastic Hilux suspension travel. The right rear wheel is almost completely out of the wheel arch, just starting to take off from the ground, and despite this circumstance, Toyota continues to crawl up with tank equanimity. We turn off the differential lock and repeat the exercise, relying on the help of electronics that simulate locks. Toyota is still calmly climbing uphill. Well, great.

Now sand baths.

And, whether with fully engaged locks, or with the help of electronics, Toyota Hilux overcomes them with brilliance, demonstrating a fair amount of traction, excellent off-road performance of the “machine”.

And demonstrating the draft impenetrability of the suspensions too. The speed at the entrance to the sandy mountain had to be dialed decent, but the Hilux meekly endured everything. And when they decided to check how he would behave when driving in tension and drove up almost without acceleration - he crawled in without acceleration. The correct weight distribution and the excellent off-road feel of the car, which it gives the driver, helped. The moment when you need to add traction to get out, and when to drop it, so as not to dig in, is very well felt. Hilux also has a good rearview camera.

We drove all day in the rain, on wet asphalt, on gravel, mud and a sand pit, and it still allows you to get a clear picture for driving in reverse.

Now we can draw a conclusion, and it will be simple: the eighth generation Toyota Hilux has not lost any of the advantages of its ancestors, significantly adding to the size of the loading platform, the comfort and convenience of the cab, as well as driving performance on good surfaces. It also has an impressive list of passive and active safety equipment as standard: these are 7 airbags, a trajectory stabilization system, a trailer stabilization system, and so on.

Thus, we can say with full confidence that, despite a couple of minor flaws, the new Hilux is one of the best pickups in its size class in terms of a set of qualities, and driving it can be not only work, but also pleasure. At the same time, its prices are quite competitive.

As for reliability and "indestructibility", only time will tell, but the fact that all modern cars of this brand are very reliable is a fact. There is every reason to believe that the new Hilux will be worthy of the glory of its ancestors in this.
